Happy St Valentine’s Day, Oxytocin!

Often called ‘The Love Chemical,’ how much Oxytocin (C43H66N12O12S2) will be in the air this February?

For example, Oxytocin is implicated in social bonding, reproduction, childbirth, milk production and more. Wikipedia says: “Oxytocin affects social distance between adult males and females, and may be responsible at least in part for romantic attraction and subsequent monogamous pair bonding,” and “The researchers suggested that oxytocin may help promote fidelity within monogamous relationships. For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the ‘bonding hormone’.”

February 14 will likely also feature significant quantities of the zymurgical chemical commonly known as “the shy lover’s friend.” On St Valentine’s Day, it could be all to easy to mis-understand a paper titled “Alcohol may be more risky to the heart than previously thought”…
